Mentoring and Value Cell
Introduction
Shillong Commerce College introduced the Mentoring and Value Education Cell in the College in response to the suggestions made by the AQAR. Having a wide difference in the student population with regard to educational and economic background, the mentoring cell
was introduced to provide a better understanding of individual students and do the best to help bring out the best in them.
Benefits of Mentoring in Students
1. It helps with career planning
2. Access to a knowledgeable and concerned discussion about new ideas with your Mentor.
3. Opportunities to reflect on and more clearly define own career goals
4. New professional contacts (like P.O, SSC, CLAT, Coaching classes on UPSC, MPSC)
5. Support with professional challenges, such as resolving conflict, preparing for Career exams, making career decisions
6. An opportunity to observe and interact with a role model
7. Increased self-awareness and self-confidence
Every year the names of all students are collected and arranged, divided into groups depending on the numbers of students. Each group is assigned a teacher/mentor who is responsible for collecting academic performance and class attendance of individual students.
The teacher/mentor is given necessary information regarding his/her mentees and expected to offer guidance and counselling as and when required. Mentors in their discussion with their mentees make them aware of the presence of the College Counsellor within the college
campus if they needed help.
Value Education classes on different topics are taken by the College Counsellor for B.Com and BA students to encourage and motivate them.
The topics on different levels of value Education:-
1. PERSONAL LEVEL: Compassion, Trust, Courage, Acceptance, Joy, Sense of freedom and absence of conflicts. Coping with Loneliness
2. INTERPERSONAL LEVEL: Love, Empathy, Co-operation, Listening and hearing, Acceptance of differences, Appreciation and Friendship.
3. COMMUNITY LEVEL: Reconciliation, Tolerance, Mutual Respect, Healthy family relationships & respect for parents, Appreciation and protection of Environment.
4. NATIONAL LEVEL: Respect for child, Respect for older people, Human rights citizenship, Freedom from bias and stereotypes, Mother tongue, National Integration, Secularism, Intercultural and Multicultural
Harmony.
Aims and Objectives
1. Awareness of the existence of the Mentoring Team to all the students.
2. Making a students’ profile through Google Forms
3. Mentorship program
4. To counsel academically weak students and to play an important role in helping troubled students cope with academics.
5. Identify students’ problems for example, alcohol and drug addiction or abuse
