Department of Political Science

Introduction

The Department of Political Science, Shillong Commerce College, is one of the newly established departments under the Bachelor of Arts (BA) programme, which was introduced in 2020 in the college. The Department of Political Science offers BA with Honours course and also offers multidisciplinary, skill-based papers/course (across various departments)as per the Curriculum/Syllabus developed by the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU).

The Political Science Department aims at inculcating the discipline of Political Science in students by focusing on the theory and practice of government and politics at the local, state, national, and international levels. We are dedicated to developing understandings of institutions, practices, and relations that constitute public life and modes of inquiry that promote citizenship.

The Political Science Department through the teaching of the discipline hopes to help students understand the basics, including the various subfields like Political Theory, International Politics, Public Administration, Indian Politics, North-East Politics and more. This would serve as a foundation that would help students in whichever endeavor they seek to follow, whether in Competitive Examinations, Masters Level, Research, Administration, Public Policy, Social Service etc.

Currently, the young department compromises of 3 faculty members, Ms Loyola Dkhar (M.A. Political Science, NET), Ms Janice D. Pala (M.A. Political Science, NET),Mr Benezer Wanchand (M.A. Political Science, NET) and 1 part-time teacher, Ms Risaiaphi Lyngdoh (M.A. Political Science). The department hopes to grow in strength as well as qualitatively in the coming years, as an important constituent of the College.
