Department of English

Introduction

Since the inception of Shillong Commerce College in the year 1967, English has been an add-on course to the Commerce Stream to facilitate a fundamental understanding of English as a subject. In 2019, Shillong Commerce College received affiliation for Arts Stream through the North Eastern Hill University and a full- fledged English Department was formed, with Dr. Sabita Sen as the Head of the Department. The faculty of the Department not only caters to the academic achievement of its students through the syllabus provided by the North Eastern Hill University but also offers a wide range of lectures on English Language and communication skills that caters to a holistic development of the Honours students. The department embraces the individuality of each of their students allowing them to branch beyond the subject matter, into other spheres of the arts. The department has encouraged students to pursue creative avenues in hopes of facilitating a keen understanding of life beyond the classroom.

It is the vision of the Department to enhance the students’ critical thinking skills and to celebrate originality in expressing and negotiating the complexities of an increasingly intercultural world and to effectively communicate a global mindset. It is the objective of the Department of English to inculcate in students an appreciation of literary works through reading and understanding different works of social, cultural and ethical background and to encourage students to have a more humanistic approach and to prepare them to be worthy and value-oriented human beings.

The Department of English consists of Dr. Sonita Khongwir as the Head of the Department, Ms. Christina Wanniang, Ms. Dahun Dora Syiem, Ms. Nikita Celine Dawn Synrem and Ms. Matti Bakor War as present faculty members .
